It's not every day that you get to sit amongst 250 fellow Creatives in your hometown, but on May 13th, I relished in it. There's something amazing about being around people who see the world as you see it, through the warped and beautiful lens of a designer. I was lucky enough to attend the 3rd annual Create Upstate right here in Syracuse, NY along with fellow 10 Redder Chris May.
Create Upstate is a design conference that brings together designers, both student and professional, from all across Upstate New York to gather as a community. Each year, they assemble a roster of amazing speakers that give their insights, musings, and knowledge learned thus far as a designer. This year we heard from a food typographer, app developer, website guru, illustrator and Dan Cassario, a rock star of the design world. Dan was quite easily the most impressive of the very impressive bunch. The founder of Young Jerks, a Brooklyn based firm that focuses on type, lettering, logo and packaging design, Dan was enigmatic and engaging, taking us on a journey from his art camp days as a teen to asking the pivotal question, “Are you a Lennon or a McCartney?” (I’m a McCartney) Starting off as a lone wolf, he has now broadened his company talent and found that “It’s good to work with the right team.” As an 8 year resident at 10 Red Design, I can relate.
All in all, Create Upstate was awesome. Great people. Great location. Great refresher in why I love being a designer. Looking forward to next year! If you want to learn more about the event, check out www.createupstate.com
